NOCN - SiteRight Automatic Cable Avoidance Training
Cable Avoidance Training - Automatic CAT including Leica Detection DD120/130, Vivamax and Ezisystem
Our NOCN SiteRight Cable Avoidance Training course, developed in partnership with Leica Geosystems, focuses on the safe use of the Leica Detection DD120/130 series locators and Ezisystem accessories. This advanced, CITB-approved program emphasizes practical skills in detecting and tracing underground utilities to prevent strikes, injuries, and disruptions. It covers electromagnetic detection principles, equipment limitations, and integration with safe digging practices, ensuring compliance with HSE HSG47 guidelines.
Who Should Attend
This course is designed for operatives, groundworkers, highways workers, utility technicians, and site supervisors who regularly use cable avoidance tools to locate buried services. It is suitable for both novices and experienced users seeking formal accreditation, with a minimum age requirement of 17.
Course Objectives
Delegates will:
Understand the importance of cable avoidance equipment and the risks of non-use.
Grasp electromagnetic detection theory and equipment limitations.
Conduct risk assessments for underground services.
Proficiently operate the DD120/130 locators and Ezisystem for accurate detection.
Integrate findings into safe work systems, using both locator and transmitter effectively.
Course Content
The course combines theoretical instruction with extensive practical exercises tailored to Leica equipment.
Theoretical Components
Reasons for using cable avoidance tools and consequences of utility strikes.
Electromagnetic location principles, signal modes (power, radio, transmitter-induced), and factors affecting accuracy (e.g., soil conditions, interference).
Risk assessment principles aligned with HSG47.
Interpretation of utility plans, symbols, and limitations.
Equipment specifics: Automatic CAT’s, DD120/130 features, Ezisystem accessories (e.g., signal clamps, sondes), and maintenance requirements.
Legal framework: Health and Safety at Work Act, PUWER, and HSE guidance.
Practical Components
Pre-use checks, calibration, and setup of DD120/130 and Ezisystem.
Hands-on scanning techniques: grid patterns, direct connection, induction, and sonde use.
Locating and tracing simulated buried services.
Marking detected utilities and documenting results.
Emergency procedures for strikes.
Duration
One full day, including breaks and practical sessions.
Assessment and Certification
Assessment includes a practical task demonstration and multiple-choice theory test. Successful delegates receive an NOCN SiteRight certificate, valid for 3 years, with CITB grant eligibility (GET2374). Refresher training is recommended periodically.
Benefits
This course builds operator confidence through superior practical focus, reduces utility strike incidents, ensures regulatory compliance, and qualifies for CITB funding. It enhances site safety and efficiency, making it ideal for Leica equipment users.
